Is work experience necessary for MBA
To answer this simply it is no. In none of the MBA colleges having work experience is not compulsory to expect that of Executive MBA. However, as MBA is a professional level course that is inclined towards the development of industrial skills, people often like to think that with job experience the MBA can be an added advantage. Of course, that statement is not wrong. However, for freshers MBA can defiantly add value.
Many of the top management colleges in India like the IIMs, XLRI have certain weightage allocated for job experience, which is around 5% of the total selection score. Of course, this means for the ones having professional experience will certainly have some advantage over going on to the selection process. However, even for freshers, having good updates about business world, that should not be a barrier.
As the total number of MBA aspirants are growing exponentially, it has been seen that the majority of them are freshers. They may come from the different educational background but with no direct experience of any industry. In fact, all the business schools have implemented the internship program within the MBA course that can vary from 2-3 months. And the main purpose of this internship is mostly for the freshers to have real-life exposure to the industry and external corporate culture that is a major step in getting them ready for placements.
On the other hand, people having experience do definitely enjoy some benefits. Especially, if you have to do experience in sales, you can easily enhance your professional communication skills with the teachings of MBA. People with prior job experience can also expect to have a better pay package during the placements if they are able to capitalize on the previous job. People with job experience can also acquire entrepreneurship skill much better than freshers.
However, if you have job experience it is important that you select the course and specialization in management to ensure that you can take full advantage of your experience.
